All ENMU-Roswell Associate Degrees require 60 or more credit hours. There may be cases when program requirements can also satisfy General Education requirements and students may have less than 60 overall credit hours (or the required credit hours for the program). In these cases, students will need to complete elective courses to satisfy the minimum credit hours requirement. We recommend visiting with an Academic Advisor or Program Director to determine the best elective options.
ENMU-Roswell: Students must complete a total of 8 credits in general education laboratory sciences at ENMU-Roswell to satisfy the requirements for the A.S. in Secondary Education. Students must choose one course set from Life Sciences and one course set from Physical Sciences.

Teacher Education General Education requirements are governed by the State of New Mexico's licensure requirements. So while many of the general education courses are "recommended," please work closely with the Teacher Education Faculty advisor to ensure that the right decisions are made to complete all requirements based on the school you plan to transfer in order to complete your Bachelor's degree. The recommendations listed for each category should be considered more than recommendations; they should be viewed as requirements, especially if students are planning to transfer to ENMU-Portales.
When choosing electives, students should consider what they will be teaching in high school. For example, if a student wants to be a math teacher, the student should choose the math electives. If the student wants to be an Ag teacher, the student should choose the Ag electives. Please meet with an advisor and check with the four-year institution to make the best decisions for your plans.
Additionally, it will be important for the student to determine which type of licensure they plan on pursuing. Not all schools offer Bachelor's degrees in secondary education. Especially if the student is interested in pursuing their Bachelor's degree from ENMU-Portales, it will be critical to work with an advisor both at ENMU-Roswell and ENMU-Portales to ensure that there are no loss of credits upon transfer. Depending on the licensure path chosen by the student (post-baccalaureate or alternative), students may or may not be required to complete additional credits in certain general education areas to be compliant with state law.
